Choosing the right helmet is the most important decision for anyone who rides a motorcycle — it's what protects your head. But full-face, modular, jet or off-road: which one is best for you? It mostly depends on your riding style. Here we explain the differences.
Full-face helmet
It has full coverage with a fixed chin bar, offering maximum protection, the best aerodynamics and the best noise isolation. It's the ideal choice for the road, sport riding and long trips. In exchange, it feels more closed-in and warm at low speed on hot days. See the full-face helmets.
Modular (flip-up) helmet
It has a chin bar that flips up, combining the versatility of a jet helmet with the protection of a full-face one. It's perfect for city and touring, for glasses wearers or for anyone who stops often and likes to talk without taking the helmet off. It's slightly heavier due to the mechanism. Jet (open-face) helmet
Leaves your face uncovered: it's light, cool and gives wide visibility, ideal for the city, scooters and classic motorcycles. In exchange, it offers less protection since it has no chin bar — so it's better suited to urban rides at moderate speeds.
Off-road / motocross helmet
It's light and very well ventilated, with a peak against sun and mud and a pronounced chin bar that directs your breath away. It's used with motocross goggles instead of a visor and is made for off-road riding, enduro and motocross.
How to choose the size
Measure the circumference of your head with a tape measure, about a finger's width above your eyebrows, and compare it with each model's size chart. The helmet should feel snug but without pressure points: properly fitted, it shouldn't turn or slide when you shake your head. If in doubt between two sizes, choose the snugger one — the lining eases a little with use.
